Overview

Joint project UAB – ICGC for a universtiy master’s degree on Geoinformation

The Master on Geoinformation Applications and Management (Master on Geoinformation) is the 19th edition of the Master on Geographic Information Tecnologies, a UAB-specific master’s degree held since the year 1996-97. Currently it is in process to become an official University Master degree (expected in 2017-18).

From the 18th edition, and in the future as official University Master, the Master on Geoinformation Applications and Management is coorganized by the Departament de Geografia de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in cooperation with LIGIT (Laboratori d’Informació Geogràfica i Teledetecció) of the UAB, and the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (the regional mapping agency from the Catalan Governement). Both, UAB and ICGC, have united their knowledge, expertise and resources to offer a universtiy master’s degree on Geoinformation, which is new, broad, comprehensive and up to date to the current state of the art of geoinformation.

New programme

The new programme of studies of the Master on Geoinformation Applications and Management maintains the contents focused on design and implementation of geographic information systems at the corporate level and on GIS applications (desktop, web and mobile) development and programming, which bring tools and services to end users.

At the same time, the renewed programnme adds new contents directed to project design and management of geoinformation products and services for smart cities applications.

Moreover, fundamental subjects on cartography and spatial analysis have been widened and reoriented to keep pace of the new and multiple sources of geospatial information (sensors, geolocation of mobile devices, dynamic data, big data, etc,) as well as the new tools required to manage and to incorporate them in smart applications. Applications development and programming has also been extended to the programming of geospatial mobile apps.

Two specialties

With the new subjects added and the widening of the ever essential contents, the programme has been reordered in three blocks, one basic and common and two specialized. Thus the programme offers two specialties of the Master’s degree: one on Geo-applications development and programming, which corresponds essentially to the past editions programme, and the other on Management of projects of geoinformation production or application, that incorporates most of the new subjects added.

Students then acquire one of the specialties by following the common block and one of the specialty blocks. Thus the degree obtained can be one of the following:

  • Master on Geographic Information Tecnologies, Specialty on Geo-applications Development
  • Master on Geographic Information Tecnologies, Specialty on Geoinformation Management for Smart Cities

Degree recongnized as official University Master degree

Master on Geoinformation is still offered this year, 2016-17, as an UAB-specific Master’s degree. However as soon as the process to become an official University Master degree will complete (expected in 2017-18) postgraduates could claim for the recognition of their degree and obtain the new official degree of University Master on Geoinformation Applications and Management.
